Raw. Visceral. Unhinged. An easy way to sum up Child Bite’s performance Friday night at The Loving Touch in Ferndale. But then, there is nothing easy about Child Bite. The band oozed a primal intensity as they thrust a riotous battering ram of sound upon a crowd that packed in closer to the stage with each passing song in the setlist.
Frontman Shawn Knight has the face of a ancient Greek philosopher, and a frantic energy that makes Iggy Pop look like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz before the oil can. Aristostle on amphetamine. A preacher with the apocalypse in this eyes. He twisted, coiled, leaped, and writhed like a like a one man thunderstorm. The band fed on this energy with aplomb, driving a Mack truck of audio chaos through the packed house. Thick. Dense. Unrelenting. And tight. Really tight.
Child Bite are excellent ambassadors for the spirit, grit and grease of Detroit. A band that locals should celebrating with fêtes, triumphs and and bronze statues. Although they likely couldn’t stand still long enough to pose for the latter.
